Oklo Inc., headquartered in Santa Clara, California, is building the Aurora Powerhouse — a compact fast fission reactor designed to generate 15 to 75 MWe using recycled nuclear waste as fuel. Founded in 2013 by Jacob and Caroline DeWitte, Oklo went public in 2024 via SPAC merger (NYSE: OKLO). The company had its first combined license application rejected by the NRC in January 2022 citing insufficient accident analysis. A second application was submitted in 2023 and is currently under review. Oklo is targeting criticality at Idaho National Laboratory by July 4, 2026. Sam Altman served as Chairman until April 2025 when he stepped down to avoid conflicts with OpenAI's energy supply negotiations with the company. Meta Platforms has signed an agreement for 1.2 gigawatts of Oklo power. The company is also building a nuclear fuel recycling facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee through its acquisition of Atomic Alchemy.
