GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy is the joint venture between GE Vernova and Hitachi commercializing the BWRX-300 — a 300 MWe boiling water SMR that leverages over 60 years of GE reactor operating experience. The design simplifies the traditional boiling water reactor by eliminating unnecessary systems, targeting a 90% reduction in concrete and structural volume versus conventional plants. In April 2025, Ontario Power Generation received a construction licence from Canada's nuclear regulator for the first BWRX-300 at Darlington, with a 2029 target in-service date — making it the most advanced SMR deployment timeline in the Western world. GE Vernova is pursuing deployments in the US through the Tennessee Valley Authority, as well as in Estonia, Poland, and the UK. BWXT has been selected to manufacture reactor components.
