BWXT manufacturing the reactor pressure vessel for OPG's Darlington BWRX-300 — first commercial BWRX-300 deployment globally. Darlington is the first commercial advanced SMR project in North America to break ground.
Subsidiary launched August 2025 to commercialize TRISO fuel for the advanced reactor wave. Currently produces 1-2 reactors-worth annually at Lynchburg. Manufactured TRISO since 2003 in partnership with Idaho National Laboratory under DOE Advanced Gas Reactor Fuel Development Program. Also shipped 100+ kg purified HALEU oxide to DOE programs.
BWXT serves as Owner's Engineer in a three-party consortium for Bulgaria's Kozloduy New Build Units 7 & 8 — two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors. Full contract spans approximately 10 years and is valued at hundreds of millions of euros.
BWXT's largest business segment. Manufactures and assembles complete naval nuclear reactor assemblies. Recent contracts: $2.1B (Feb 2025), $2.6B (July 2025) for Virginia/Columbia subs + Ford carriers, $174M (Sept 2025) naval nuclear fuel via Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin TN. Total recent contract value over $4.9B in calendar 2025.
BWXT's flagship space-nuclear program DRACO (nuclear thermal propulsion subcontract under Lockheed Martin) was cancelled by DARPA + NASA in May/June 2025 in the FY2026 budget. Cancellation cited declining ROI vs falling SpaceX/Starship launch costs. BWXT retains 22+ years of TRISO and HALEU expertise applicable to next-generation programs including USAF/AFRL JETSON nuclear electric propulsion and Fission Surface Power for lunar missions. Historical NTP/HALEU work delivered.
First US advanced nuclear microreactor under DoD prime contract. Transportable in four 20-ft shipping containers. Designed to deliver 1.5 MWe for up to 3 years without refueling. Per Executive Order 14299 (May 2025), targeting commercial operation at a domestic military base by Sept 30, 2028. TRISO fuel core fully fabricated. Integration partners: Rolls-Royce LibertyWorks (power conversion module), Northrop Grumman, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Torch Technologies.
DOE microreactor program funding (2020). Predates the 2022 DoD Project Pele $300M prime contract award. BWXT's early TRISO + microreactor R&D investment.
NNSA nuclear thermal propulsion contract (2022) supporting BWXT's subcontractor work on the DRACO program (Lockheed Martin prime, $499M total NASA + DARPA). NOTE: DRACO program cancelled by DARPA + NASA in May/June 2025 due to declining ROI vs falling launch costs. BWXT's space-nuclear future now pivots toward Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NEP) and Fission Surface Power (FSP).
BWXT completed $100M acquisition of L3Harris Aerojet Ordnance Tennessee in Jonesborough, TN. Bought additional Tennessee land April 2025 for new facility expansion.
