BWXT confirmed as DRACO nuclear thermal propulsion fuel and reactor supplier

BWXT Advanced Technologies has been building nuclear thermal propulsion fuel and reactor hardware for the DARPA/NASA DRACO program since its 2023 selection. The program targets an in-space demonstration of nuclear thermal rocket propulsion — the first such U.S. milestone.

BWXT's DRACO work validates high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel fabrication capabilities at commercial scale, creating spillover benefits for terrestrial advanced reactors facing the same fuel supply bottlenecks. The 2027 targeted demonstration timeline also pressure-tests the regulatory pathway for space nuclear systems, with lessons applicable to NRC-DOE coordination on novel reactor licensing. Watch for BWXT's HALEU throughput metrics and whether NASA's schedule holds—slippage would signal broader industrial base constraints affecting the entire advanced nuclear sector.
